Needs some 'play' since it's a multi-function control. Clockwise, counter-clockwise turning combined with push-down.

Makes sense.

Mine has slight play - very slight - >5% turn (less than five percent). I pulled the platic knob off and the play is in the actual switch and not the plastic knob.
