If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Anyone played around with the audio settings on their VP8000's yet? I've gotten a couple of observations from other operators that my audio seemed as one said "a little strained" compared to the other radios (apx8000's). I'm using internal mic on my radio. At default setting they said audio was pretty hot as well. My hearing is going so I am not the best for evaluating audio--with my hearing aids in they amplify the high end and make my radios sound very treble (but intelligible) and without everything is bass (my hearing drops off rapidly after 1,300hz). Just wondering what others are experiencing as far as audio reports. This is all on P25.

I have had no problems with the audio on my vp8000. People think I'm operating on a mobile or base station.

I set it to powerful, turned off all the other audio mods except quiet something. I set my audio sliders to 0-5-12-5-0.

I’ll try that. I’m far from home (LA) and my only test besides audio checks from others is to let my NX5300 record traffic from me and others then compare.

I recommend using the presets for internal and external. External has several settings for various speaker-mics as well.

I started there. Disclaimer: I have hearing loss above 1300hz and usually use hearing aids which help but certainly don’t fix the problem. On my receive audio settings I often boost mid and high range. The results are not always pleasant sounding with hearing aids but my comprehension does improve. Alas pleasant sounding and comprehension don’t necessarily track together. I’m temporarily in SoCal where I have no legal privileges to PS systems so cannot transmit. The offset is a good P25 amateur community with network of repeaters on 440 & 900 including simulcast. Lots of radio techs and PS people as members. They are almost exclusively Motorola users and APX at that (900 xts&xtl). My VP8000 is new to them and I have gotten a lot of comments on my audio. First it was too hot. -6 to -12db on my radio tx put me somewhat even with their audio which seems too low. This was both my VP8000 & NX5300. The other observation by them was that my audio seemed a little strained—whatever that means (less smooth like lower sampling rate). When playing back qso’s (NX can record hours) of others and me I did notice that the VP lacked some of the warmth and fidelity of the APX8000’s they were using. The level of comprehension of VP traffic did not seem to suffer despite its less friendly (or unfamiliar) sound. I’m here with too much free time so I’m trying to equal or beat APX audio. The irony of my bad ears is not lost nor the ad-hoc trial and error uncalibrated subjective methods used. I try to factor in that the locals are Motorola snobs. Side note- my kind of hearing loss is not that rare among firemen—probably the older ones. All of this is P25 C4FM (including simulcast sites). I already know from years of use my NX5000 analog TX audio was sub par, very much lacking the richness of my TK290/390 radios (and no adjustments allowed for analog) while digital seemed good. I haven’t really evaluated the VP analog yet. My ultimate is to understand and be understood…but nobody wants a bad sounding radio…

Do not turn on low voice boost in the armada settings. I had some problems at an event where I had my voice raised (not normal speaking voice) and it was reported as me "splattering" from others.

I would only turn this on if I had someone who was very quiet at all times.

It also seems to amplify background noise....

Having played around with it more...

For Analog:
Set the internal microphone to the internal preset.
NO ANR/AGC/Interconnect Options. These seem to kill the audio on tuned repeaters, over simplex they sound great. By kill the audio I mean make it all muddled and almost unintelligible.

Side point: I cannot set a pleasing button press tone volume. 0 db is loud. -1db is silent until audio volume is turned up pretty loud. What I want is the button press volume to track evenly with the audio volume plus or minus a percent or db value. I like button press volume to be about half or less than receive audio.
