• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Hello Kenwood radio people, can the VP8000 do non affiliate scanning? I am interested in purchasing this radio for conventional use and NAS

Id be interested to know what Dealer would sell one to an individual like this, and for this purpose. Not to mention the Software.
Not I.

There are many "ham friendly" dealers and the like who will. Some in these forums. Nothing wrong with it. My question would be...why not?

I believe any trunking for Kenwood required the obvious and the dealers aren't willing to give the required. The few who have shown off this ability have access to such themselves or their close friend and splurted on videos showing off Unless the vp8000 can do it like the Harris and BK it would be interesting.

But last dealer I know said the normal required key is needed to unlock the options and good luck getting a dealer to just randomly hand it out.

The why not is obvious. Dealer gives his best friends cousins nephew access. He plays with it. Screws it up and it registers. Red flags pop up and eventually someone is out of a job or worse.

It gives access to the values and can be changed and manipulated to affiliate at will with a key. One has to think where that key will end up if the radio is ever sold or hobby person drops and it's given away or what will happen to their business and dealer license.

There was one TikTok guy who said he had his done by a dealer he knew but they wouldn't give the key. Period.

He's stuck with whatever way it was setup but had permission from a chief and admin as well as he was public safety in a sister agency to one he monitored.

JVC Kenwood will only provide A-keys with a signed form from the system owner. No exceptions. Not even to their dealers.

If a dealer is dumb enough to try and get an A-key without written authorization from system owner and give it out to unauthorized party, they'll be out of business. F#ck around and find out.
Indeed, however let's not overlook the fact that many dealers are also the local radio shop who is authorized to program subscribers by the AHJ, and so they would have their own set of keys (A-key, ASK, AWK, etc.)

I kind of like the fact that I don't program the radios I put on the system here. I can't be blamed for stuff like that.

The why not is obvious.

Owning a radio vs having a system programmed into it are two different things. Again, no reason for a dealer to not make a sell on a radio if someone wants to pay. Doesn't mean they also have to program in a system the buyer isn't authorized for, which they shouldn't do.

Was more referring to a dealer using an A-key (lawfully obtained) to aid/assist in others in illicit programming. The one JVC Kenwood dealer here in my area has an A-key, I issued it to them- and they have to come to me to get radio IDs added to my PM- and they are trustworthy.

Trust is something that should never be broken between local shops and system owners.

A lot of people now days are using Harris XG stuff for NAS, you can scan 127 talkgroups in one scan list (the most of any NAS supported brand). It's also great because you can use the same basic template in RPM for different mobiles, portables etc.

You can also use Moto or BK and I believe one other brand I don't recall at the moment. BK only supports 16 TGs for a scan list, APX supports 52, XTS is 15. Btw I'm not endorsing NAS in any way, just saying what the options are.

I have talked to a few friends one had this Suggestion, Perhaps. @W3AXL can you confirm if any of these steps are on the right track? @AF1UD

No Key" (Sys ID 000) option to build out your programming, then have the right person check over your programming and write it to the radio with the final system ID.

He says It's just a simple drop-down in Armada to switch between "No Key" and different loaded system keys, this allows you to build everything out yourself and have it programmed later.

This can be done however, Armada will tell you it needs an AKEY to write to the radio. I have a friend who is trying to get a key generator for this.

That would be good. The VP8000 appeals to my DMR and P25 needs, but I also Require NAS capabilities.

Unfortunately, I've been told that this doesn't exist at all in the wild. Locked down tight by EFJ.
