VPN on Public Wifi Concerns

How safe is it to use open public wifi, if you're using a VPN?

How about using a VPN and accessing an HTTPS encrypted site?

I was of the impression a VPN would add protection if you're using unsecured wifi, but was reading that MITM attacks can nullify your use of a VPN as a security measure.

Any computer security guys or pentesters care to weigh in?

The VPN I use has a firewall and the VPN service. Without the firewall the internet won't work and the firewall uses their servers. I would think with that approach it would be safe.

So if the VPN is bypassed somehow,the firewall is still connected. If that is disconnected they would get nothing as my internet won't work.

I use Windscribe Pro if wondering.
