I’ve noticed a moderate volume of what is definitely law enforcement traffic on VTAC 39 (VHF Conventional). The signal is strongest in the Smyrna area and sounds like Smyrna PD judging from the the road names that they’re dispatching units to. Can anyone confirm this or shed some light on why they’re using this frequency?

Yes Smyrna PD, likely getting new radios or reprogramming radios for TACN. They have not been on their normal TACN site and have been there about a week. Actually 8TAC93 is probably where they are at, it is linked to both UTAC41 and the VTAC repeater. That has been annoying to have some much routine activity on that many interop channels.

Their TACN site in Smyrna had recently been upgradeD with some added frequencies from LaVergne and is now also P25 Phase II TDMA capable.

So. Middle TN
Which TACN sites should be programmed in order to receive both Smyrna and LaVergne?

Smyrna is currently active on the TACN Smyrna site. Their primary dispatch channels are P25 Phase 1 FDMA digital and not encrypted. Recent upgrade to Smyrna PD has moved some of their back channels to P25 Phase 2 TDMA digital and encrypted.

La Vergne is currently active on the TACN Antioch site. Their primary dispatch channels are P25 Phase 2 TDMA digital and not encrypted. Their remaining channels are encrypted.

For La Vergne, be sure you are using a scanner that is capable of P25 Phase 2 TDMA digital, as some of the older digital scanners only work with P25 Phase 1 FDMA digital.

Eventually I expect the Smyrna site will be opened back up again to other users and La Vergne users as well. La Verge added more frequencies to that site and it was upgraded to also be Phase 2 TDMA capable. Right now the Smyrna site is not showing any other 700/800 TACN peer sites, and no longer carrying other state traffic like THP.

The reason you heard them was because there link to TACN was cut from the tornado and they were using interop during the repair. VTAC 39 is patched to UTAC41 and 8TAC93. Smyrna remains 100% on FDMA and LaVergen is all TDMA> SMYRNA Site is fully operational now

Thanks, ya that explains further, that started just after the tornado. For a bit i thought it was related to the tornado, but then confirmed as routine Smyrna units. Seems like that delayed the upgrades and utilization for that site a bit then. And seeing the TACN Smyrna site back and linked this week, state users and LaVergne now carried on the site as well. Seems like the site was working in site trunking, eventually Smyrna users were back on the site, but ya the consoles not active again until linked back to the network.
