Yes, it's great - very durable, great reception, etc. If you can find a good deal on one used then go for it. That being said, the new VX-170 has much better battery life, better durability/water resistance, louder audio/speaker output, etc. Check out the spec's and see if those features are worth a few extra $$ to you.

I've had a 150 for almost 2 years. I think it's well worth the money. I picked up a 1400mAh battery for it so battery life isn't an issue. The 170 looks like a really nice radio too, but I don't need the few features they added. I like the angle of the display better than the more traditional on the 170. Great for clipping it to your sunvisor !! ;-)

Anyway, that's my 2 cents....

i would go with the FT-60 R. It is like the VX150 but it has multi-band capabilites, so you can monitory aviation--> 800 mhz. I had the 150 for several years and upgraded because i wanted to listen to 400 and 800 mhz. With this said, the 150 is a great little radio for a beginner who soley wants to monitor 144-170mhz and utilize it as a 2m amatuer radio. Between you me and the fencepost, i would kick down the extra cash to get a little better of a radio.

On the Vertex/Yaesu AMATUER radios, the vol knob is on the left (closest to the antenna) and the channel/CSQ is on the right. The vertex COMMERICAL radios are the opposite. The vol key is on the right and the channel is on the left. Keep in mind that the number series for the Amatuer Vs Commercial radios is very similar. (I own a vx 150 (amatuer) and two commercial VX160 radios).

The only down side of the vertex 150 is the key pad. the ink / paint they use to label the keys rubs off over time, but i suppose over time, all radio key pads will rub off. The easy way around this is to get a hard leather case.
