    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

VX-231, VX-351 How to Dismantle

Hi all,

Could anyone provide me with some help on our to dismantle a 231 or 351. I have one of each that needs the PTT button replacing. The black cover plus the silicone cover underneath.

For the VX-351 here's what you do
1. Remove battery
2. Remove the accessory cap cover (2 screws)
3. Pull off the Volume and channel knobs and unscrew the antenna
4. Remove the two screws at the bottom of the chasis under the battery. One on each side
5. Gently pry up on the metal chassis at the bottom of the chassis between the two battery
latch pins. Separate front case from chassis by pulling out the chassis from the front case.
6. Note that the front case has the speaker with two wires attached to the chassis circuit board
The speaker leads allow you to lay down the front case next to the radio chassis.
You can then access the PTT Frame and button. Make sure the white plastic PTT frame goes back
in same position as you removed it.
Also make sure the rubber gasket seats properly around the chassis and that the battery contacts
gasket seats properly in the chassis. Once reassembled make sure the PTT button and the two
buttons underneath the PTT button work.
Also there is probably a video on YouTube showing how to dismantle these radios.

Just an addition information point for the VX-351.The black plastic PTT cover is
easily removed. Just slide a small screwdriver blade under the center of the
cover and gently pry up. It is held on by 2 plastic tabs on each end. These often
come off on their own in use. You will see the PTT button underneath.
To reinstall the black PTT cover, slide a small screwdriver shank (such as a
jeweler's screwdriver) under the plastic cap in the middle of the cap and while
slightly bending down the ends of the cap you can engage the tabs in the slots in
the front case housing. Check that PTT button works properly after re-install of the cap.

I'm having issues trying to get the metal chassis out from the frame without doing too much damage!.

Sometimes the rubber gasket (including the part that fits around the accessory mike jack)
makes it hard to pull out the metal chassis. You may have to gently use a small screwdriver
blade to wedge between the front case, either between the PTT button side of the front
case and metal chassis or the opposite side, and push the front case slightly away from
the metal chassis. This has to be done if an accessory mike screw gets broken off and you
can't get it out without removing the case, as the broken screw stub will prevent the front case
from being removed.
