Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Working on programming a VX-424 and trying to do a couple of channels to monitor silently for fire tone out (i.e. no traffic until paged, like a pager). I know it has the capability and have worked with it a little but still have a couple of bugs to work out.

Here's what we have so far:

1) One dept uses a long tone (8 sec) for paging. I'm not sure how to enter that into the table so that it alerts for it. The same tone in both A and B slots? Pretty sure I've tried that and nothing happened.

2) Another is a two-tone - I have the tones right and when they page the dept with those tones it does open and monitor the traffic but no alert tones go off. I'm sure it's a setting somewhere but I've looked around and can't seem to find it. Ideas?

Any help from you guys would be appreciated.

It's been about 4 months since I posted this and haven't had any responses so I thought I'd give an update.

I did finally get the 424 programmed where I can set it to scan only the two channels for the tones (mentioned above) in an "off duty" type mode (i.e. no traffic heard unless toned out). The only thing I haven't got to work right is the alert tone - if in scan for these two channels/tones it will open the squelch and let me hear the page but it doesn't sound any alert sound. What's the deal?

Anyone have any insight??

You help would be appreciated!
