Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey guys,
I got my hands on a VX-5500 Vc and VX-5500Ud set up with the remote head. I have been doing some research and searching as far as getting these to work down in the 2m and 70cm bands. From what I can tell you have to hex edit the file. Now I have no programming experience. Is there a comprehensive "How To" somewhere out there that can walk you through the process. I love this radio as is but would really like to get these to work in the ham bands

thanks in advance

I was able to hex edit the software and get the radio to accept the 2m and 70cm bands. But I am currently experiencing some functionality issues with the transceiver. About half of my stored 2m repeaters work (with the non working ones Tx but not Rx the repeater no matter the Ctcs, open carrier and squelch settings) and my 70cm repeaters neither Tx or Rx.

The 2m side has me a little perplexed. The 70cm side I think those frequencies are too far out of band for the VCO and it needs to be retuned.

Are there any good sites/ info out there regarding VCO tuning for these radios?
