The VX-8gr is new to me and one thing I'm having problems with is getting it set to simplex mode. It always transmits with an offset. Anyone know this radio or similar (8GR is similar to the VX-8xx radios) and how to get it into simplex?

The settings that I think are pertinent are:
  • Tone is OFF
  • RPT ARS is OFF
So far I've been operating without the programming software. The manual covers a lot but says zero about simplex.

If it's the same as the 8DR, it's menu item 75: RPT SHIFT. Set to Simplex.
Shortcut FW then 6 (RPT) or rotate all the way to that menu item.

I may have found the answer to my question. First off, I did a factory reset. Let's start fresh. Going through the settings I saw that under "RPT SHIFT" there is a simplex option. I suppose there is some logic to that. But RPT ARS is supposed to make the shift automatic.

Should have refreshed the page before resetting ... and posting :)

Thanks for verifying the solution!

Thundernight, does it make any difference if the repeater shift is + or - when ARS is used?

ARS is hard programmed to automatically select the offset direction in certain segments of the 2M and 70cm bands. You can manually select the offset direction, or choose simplex.

So as I understand it:
- if ARS is on, it automatically sets the +/- and ignores whatever RPT SHIFT is set to (other than simplex).
- if ARS is off, then it will use the RPT Shift +/- setting
