VX4100 to VX4200 by swapping head

Is it possible to convert a 4 channel VX4100 into a 501 channel VX4200 by installing a VX4200 control head on a VX4100 body?

Do you need to update the firmware, or is the VX4200 firmware built into the head so all you need to do is specify the head type in the programming software after the heads have been swapped?

YES. The only problem is there are no top screws on the really old radios. The model type is in the head. Install, read it, SAVE, program it and write back to it and you've got a 501ch 4200.
Oh, and you'll have to swap the volume knob.

I think the head part # was RA048660B when I did this to a couple UHFs years back. There's also flex part # T9207042, but you can use the existing one.

So if you are taking a good complete VX4200 head from a faulty VX4200 body and placing it on a VX4100 body all you need to do is swap the heads...no need to swap volume knob?...I'm assuming the volume pot is completely built into the head rather than part of the main body.

Yep, you just need to swap the good head over to the 8ch and reconnect the flex. No need to unsolder anything.
It's been over 7 years since I did my 2. I think I just read the radio with the CE59 software, --SAVE--, edit the channels and then write back to the radio.
If that doesn't work, open the "default" file, write it to the radio, then read the radio and enter your channels.
