Can anyone tell by looking at the license data for call sign WQJD541 / freq: 463.935 (West Springfield High School), if it operates in digital mode or conventional? They use Motorola XPR portables, which I know can operate in either conventional / standard or digital.

According to the license, they should be operating in digital mode (Motorola MOTOTRBO). But sometimes MOTOTRBO users operate in analog mode. The only way to know for sure is to listen to the frequency.

Visiting the high school recently, I was near someone with a portable and noticed when the PTT button it pressed it's more of a digital sound that's emitted before talking versus the standard beep/tone accompanied with MDC signaling. That's what got me thinking. Some of the audio being received was very echoed. I've heard this being an issue with the XPR series regardless if they're digital or analog. I'll try monitoring. If I understand correctly, if they're in digital, I'll hear a garbled transmission?

If they are in TRBO it will sound like a TRS Control Channel, but you will not be able to decode it.
