The court also heard from Laurel County Public Safety Director Brian Reams. Reams addressed the court on Laurel County's need for a bomb-sniffing dog. He said while the county had access to one, officials received 75 bomb threats in Laurel County, 40 of which came from Laurel County Schools. However, the dog died because of kidney disease in March of this year and Reams said now the closest areas to Laurel County with bomb-sniffing dogs are Pineville and Dry Ridge.

In August, the Laurel County Courthouse was closed due to a bomb threat and officials had to wait on a dog. The courthouse was closed for approximately three hours as a result.

"That's bad enough, but when it starts affecting businesses like Wal-Mart and the school system, then there's a problem," Reams said.

The North Corbin Wal-Mart has recently received several threats which led to the closing of the store while crews searched the scene.

"From what I was told by Wal-Mart, for every hour they're closed, they lose a substantial amount of money," Reams said.

As a result, Wal-Mart has offered to provide $10,500 for the training and implementation of a bomb-sniffing dog in Laurel County. Reams was on hand to seek the court's approval for acceptance of the money.

"It does not cost the fiscal court a dime," he said.

Reams also said the dog would be trained in gun retrieval, which will assist at crime scenes in which the weapon cannot be located. He estimated that it would take around 90 days the dog would be trained and could be brought in. The court approved to accept the fund from Wal-Mart.
