If it is just for LAPD, I'd check around for a good used Radio Shack Pro-96 or Pro-106 or any Uniden scanner that will receive digital signals. Are you sure that is all you want to listen to?

There is no such radio on the retail market sorry to say. A digital capable radio is necessary and the lowest price I have seen is about $300 for a refurbished. You may be able to grab one for less on eBay or craigslist for less used but new forgettaboutit.

There are a couple of Whistler digital scanners that are $233, so about $255 with tax if you have Prime, $264 with shipping if you do not have Prime. One is the WS1040 a handheld, the other a desktop WS1065.

They will do LAPD digital, but not many other agencies as more agencies are going to P25.

That is the best you can do I think as close to $200 and hear LAPD unless you go used.

Allen is right on the money about the radio he suggests. I like my Uniden P25 handheld the 325p2 as well, but it is just under $400 out the door.

Also that link for the 996P2 is a very good deal.

Good luck finding something you are happy with.

From looking at the database, it *appears* that LAPD is P25 Phase 1. If so the Whistler WS1040 is probably the cheapest solution. They sell new for around $230. Whistler currently has them in stock in their Scratch and Dent section for $170 with a 90 day warranty.

Not Phase 1 but P25 Conventional for now

Thank you for the clarification. The WS1040 will receive P25 conventional and P25 Phase 1 trunked systems as well as Motorola, EDACS and LTR analog trunked systems. I think it is probably the least expensive currently sold option that covers what the OP wanted to listen to.
