Chicago Executive Airport (Formerly Palwaukee Airport) will again host the "Wings of Freedom Tour" this weekend. This year they will be flying a P-51 as well as the B-24, B-25 and B-17 that visited last year.

You can view the aircraft for free, both on the ground and flying in and out of PWK as well as take paid tours inside the aircraft. You can even fly in them (at a fairly hefty price!).

They will arrive at PWK on Friday afternoon (July 18) and leave Monday afternoon (July 21). Flights will run all 4 days.

The Public Viewing area at PWK now has the Tower frequency broadcast from a speaker near the bleachers. This is a great place to watch aircraft from, even when the warbirds aren't around! You can also find good spots near the ends of whatever runways are in use.

Last year they usually used either Runway 34 or 30. The aircraft will be parked between flights near the corner of Milwaukee Av and Palatine Road, on the site of the former Preister building. The Public Viewing area is just west of there, off of Palatine Frontage Road.

Bring water and sunblock as well as your scanner and camera!

Great tour

You are very lucky. In Feb. at FXE (Ft. Lauderdale exec) we just got the B-17. I hope we get all 4 next year. I have seen the B-17, B-24, and B-25 before, and they are all beauties. Go see the show!!

Here is a wrap-up of this weekend's activities:

PWK has a scanner set up at the Viewing Area off of Frontage Road so you can hear the tower on 119.900. Just press the red button and the Tower traffic can be heard for 30 minutes ad the box times out.

The B-25 never made it out this trip due to "difficulties".

The P-51 was kept in Hanger 19 (near Signature) at night and most of the day Saturday, it doesn't come out in the rain often.

I thought I heard some of the Collins Foundation people on FRS (462.7125) but I wasn't sure if it was them or not. Otherwise I found no new freqs in use. The ones I did hear were:

119.900 PWK Tower
121.700 PWK Ground
124.700 PWK Clearance Delivery
120.550 Chicago Departure
125.000 Chicago Departure (Finally heard PWK send someone here for the first time!)
154.860 PWK Operations (Friday afternoon they were changing bulbs)

The planes were supposed to leave after lunch today (Monday), they don't show up in Flight Aware however. I didn't get a chance to stop by so I assume they got out of Dodge OK.

Thanks to Chicago Executive Airport for making the Viewing Center available to us and to the Collins people for allowing us to view such fantastic aircraft!
