Fire burned a fence manufacturing company building to the ground off of U.S.
85 in Platteville this afternoon. The company’s name is Custom Iron Fence
and Gate, 601 S. Platte St.
The fire started in a welding area in the south building and spread to the
north building, a warehouse, which partially collapsed.
Firefighters had almost fully contained the blaze at 2:30 after battling the
blaze for three hours. There was no one inside the buildings.
Firefighters were worried about the possibility of flammable gas tanks
exploding in the south building. None ever did, said Det. Eli Rodriguez with
the Platteville Police Department.
Allen Muirhead, owner of the fence and gate company, said his business looks
like a complete loss. Muirhead employs 30 people at his business.
“It started near the welding area,” Muirhead said. “And the wind just pushed
it through.”
Traffic remains closed in both directions on U.S. 85 in Platteville because
firefighters had to run a water hose across the highway. Traffic is being
diverted on to main street through the town.
Fire crews from Frederick, Firestone, La Salle, Milliken, Gilcrest and Fort
Lupton to assist Platteville firefighters.
More updates to come.
