The issue between frs/gmrs is the expected privacy. The average joe expects there nanny cam to be private.

That is absolutely correct, but are those expectations reasonable? Granted, most people do not know they can be monitored (same with radios). Most people also do not read the manuals thoroughly so even if it is stated in the book, they wouldn't know it.

I would think, yes it is reasonable, just because a handful (by %) of us understand its not doesnt mean that its unreasonable to most of the country

My screen squelches the video when a signal isn't present, so it makes it a little more difficult to follow signals.

What would an ATM skimmer signal look like on video, i.e. how did you know that's what you found?

I imagine the video would be of the ATM keypad to see PINs as they are entered in as well as the numbers on the top side of the ATM card.

Would be pretty obvious to what was found.

At least he's not facing the camera... there are ball caps you can buy which have a IR led in the brim, powered by a 9v battery which creates a glare where your face would be on the monitor  73, n9zas

I ended up buying a cheap auto-scanning 5.8GHz monitor for my drone instead. Should be able to pick up lots of video senders, trailer hitch cameras, backup cameras, outdoor security cameras, possibly other drones, etc. Analog 5.8GHz stuff believe it or not is still very common. Do a search in any store and most stuff is still unsecured analog. 2.4GHz stuff is still being sold but most of the cheap wireless market has moved to 5.8 due to Wifi and Bluetooth interference.

FX 4.3 Inch TFT LCD Screen Monitor With 5.8GHz 32CH AV Receiver For FPV Multicopter Sale - Banggood.com

Unfortunately it's sold out, I grabbed the next to the last one. It's the white version, as some had said they got a black one. It's a great receiver for the price and is ideal for WarSpying on 5.8. Within 20 minutes of driving I found a guy just down the block sending a full 16 channel CCTV system over a 5.8 link, unscrambled! I was not aware of this hobby when the 2.4 stuff was mainstream in the early 2000s. However, it seems the cybersecurity world has done absolutely NOTHING to make 5.8 systems any more private other than just spit the composite video signals out over another frequency. So what do we get? Basically 2002 all over again, now with a lot more devices thanks to the new inexpensive drone FPV market and the general shift from 2.4GHz to 5.8GHz due to congestion of the 2.4 band. Like before, everything is cross-compatible save for the few receivers left that have issues with FatShark transmitters. Even though there isn't as much analog stuff out there today, I dare say the problem is actually WORSE now than it was before since things have gotten so much cheaper and more accessible. Case in point:

https://www.google.com/#q=5.8ghz+video&tbm=shop
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=5.8ghz+video
5.8ghz video | eBay
https://www.walmart.com/search/?query=5.8ghz video
Kmart.com

Ah yes, we're still broadcasting unsecured video signals all over the airwaves in 2016. Lovely.

Thanks. I just bought one off Amazon. Will be interesting to mess with. I wonder if it will pick up my DJI Phantom 3 Professional quad?

Cool, I've found Banggood has cheaper prices on some of the same items though. However, their site is a bit harder to navigate with the sheer amount of stuff on there and their search engine isn't the best. The DJI Phanton 3 uses a digital Lightbridge link, so no. Only the cheaper drones for the most part use analog signals. Does the one you bought do auto scanning?

I'm with you, Bud.

People can be Straight Arrows or weirdos, but one thing for sure is that all of us are just fair game for the "Powers that be" finding out everything they can about everyone.

The newspaper that used to be $10.00 a month and told you what was happening in your town & Country now is $468.00 a year and it is full of mattress advertisements and pap from both liberal & conservative journalists that mean nothing. The cops use stingrays to listen in on cellphones, people of all stripes are walking & driving around talking & texting with their noses lit up by their smartphones and wonder why bad stuff happens to them.

Yep, a sign of the times I think Thayne. Going off topic slightly, but most newspapers that try to charge you to read them online, can be skirted out of their exorbitant fees by blocking your IP with an ad blocker add on. But yes, knowledge is Definitely power, and the Cams which are now 5.8ghz are mostly unencrypted. I recently found out the 8 which watch our riverfront during public events are wireless! :). 73, n9zas

Secure your wireless router when using wireless cameras. There was news a few years ago of a website which post links to unsecured wireless camera around the world. They wanted people to find the owners of these wireless cameras to tell them they need to secure their wireless router. This is scary.
