Hello folks,

I drive through Washington County RI on my way over to I95. I do a regular commute to NYC. I have a few questions I would like to clarify.

The database has Exeter listed as a city. Is it a city or a town? Does that make a difference in RI? There are two uhf repeater freqs marked public safety. Is that for police or ems or both? I have them in my scanner but I have never copied any activity. It looks like a slow rural department. Does Exeter have a full time police dept?

I also pass through North Kingstown. Is this a separate town then Kingston? There is no listing for the police there, does anyone know it? I know they have a full time dept, because they pulled me over on the way to work at 0330 hrs.

Are they a completely separate government from South Kingstown? Are the fire districts in the area co-terminus with the town borders?

Any help is appreciated. My goal is to have a radio with freqs that will cover my entire trip from Newport to NYC, in case I encounter anything going on.

Phil, Exeter is in fact a town- The only town in Rhode Island without a police department. RISP have a "sub station" which sits next to thier rescue station. I cant remember the last time I saw a state cruiser parked there however. They have a full time ALS rescue staffed 24/7 which works with, but is seperate then the two fire depts that cover the town. Exeter Fire 1 and 2. I know Exeter Fire 1 is a UHF, but I cant remember what frequency Fire 2 and the Rescue are on.

North Kingstown is completely different then Kingston. Kingston is in fact a "village" in the town of South Kingstown. Kingston consists of URI and the nieghborhoods around it. South Kingstown Police provide coverage to the entire town- that being said URI does have its own police force who have the authority to stop you in thier general area. For Fire- South Kingstown consists of two fire districts 1) Union Fire District 2) Kingston Fire District. Union fire consists of 8 different stations throughout the towns various areas. Both districts operate and are dispatched through the South Kingstown Police on 453.450.

Thanks Bill,

A couple of other questions:

Does West Greenwich and Exeter dispatch on the same UHF freq?

I have also heard that Richmond's PD is part time, with the state answering calls during off hours.
