SUBJECT: Possible Subject in Poudre River

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, Larimer County Dive Rescue Team and Poudre Fire Authority have responded to the area of the Poudre between Taft Hill Road and Overland Trail on a report of a possible subject in the Poudre River.

At 1:54 P.M. Larimer County Sheriff’s Dispatch received a call via a passerby that five to six people were tubing or rafting on the Poudre River when all the subjects fell into the river. They reported that all but one has come out.

Fifteen members of the above agencies are involved in the search for a 29-year-old female. It is reported that the party is on a vacation and has no local contacts.

No other information is available at this time. Further information will be provided when it becomes available.

LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. -- Larimer County coroner officials say a woman who fell into the Poudre River has died

The woman was taken to Poudre Valley Hospital said Eloise B. Campanella of the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said the 29-year-old woman is from New Mexico.

She was part of a group of about five to six people tubing or rafting on the fast-moving river, swollen from spring run-off. Something happened and everyone fell into the river, Campanella said, and all but the woman were able to get to shore.

Sheriff's deputies said the woman was on vacation and has no local contacts.

Dive Team Member James Lynxwiler helped pull her body out of the river, and he said she was not wearing a lifejacket.

He said intertubers tend to have less experience on the water than kayakers and rafters.

“This is very common for people in intertubes. They don’t understand the relentless force involved and so they’re unprepared for it,” said Lynxwiler.

Rescuers said this serves as a high-water warning.

They recommended wearing a life jacket and scouting out an area for dangers before riding the river.

I was up there camping a week and a half ago, when we got up there it was in the pre-run off stages and over the course of 2-3 days it came up 4 ft. This time of year that river is nothing to toy with nor is any other river at full run off.
