I just googled the HIPAA rules regarding ambulance/hospital comms and learned it IS permitted even after fully acknowledging the comms can be intercepted with the use of a scanner. Apparently in 2014 the question was raised, studied and answered. I won’t bore the forum more by listing the reason(s) these comms are allowed.
I've worked at a cmed center for 8 years, not once have I heard any protected information shared in a med patch. So if it does ever happen, its very uncommon.

Please pardon my suspicion but if you worked in a CMED center and never heard any part of what HIPAA considers “protected medical history” of any patient an ambulance was transporting, just what exactly WERE they talking about on their radios? I mean, if not vital signs what? Can you remember any of what the comms were about? I’m curious as to what you heard. Because if the comms didn’t exchange patient care, the only reason for CMED’s existence would be routing the ambulances to hospitals and nothing more. Can you elaborate?

It seems you have a misunderstanding of what HIPAA actually is, but at risk of further scolding from moderators, ill refer you to this link and leave it at that. Health Privacy: HIPAA Basics | PrivacyRights.org

There’s something called the letter of the law and then there’s how it’s applied realistically. They differ most times and I have no issue with the way it’s practiced as opposed to the way it was intended because of unforeseen issues that pop up. So be it. I have no misunderstanding of what HIPAA was intended to be and any morphing it has gone thru. I was an active EMT, the first in any of the FD’s in Farmington, certified through JDH in their second class and remained an EMT until I retired after 35 years of service. I saw HIPAA come into existence after the Windsor Locks tornado and have followed its buildout throughout. After I retired I lost track of the concern but remembered the original intent. The discussion has been civil and any intervention by admins is unwarranted… just to keep the record accurate. I have no objection if the thread is closed.

Thanks for letting me know the moderation staff should have stayed out of this thread.
