Hello I am new to scanning. I have the homepatrol that i assume is supposed to be pre programed! I have this feeling even with supplied software and supposive rr updates I am missing out on some of the indiana hoosier safe t channels. I really need to communicate with someone in my area. I am really so lost, and I really can not find anywhere to dumb this whole thing down enough fir me. It seems the safe t is a bit different than most areas? I dont understand the trunking, talk group ids, hex, dex, and any of the other lingo. Everything out there is so spread out I can not find a place to start and grow from. Right now i am only getting feedback on two talk groups on safe t for wayne county law, and richmond police. Please anyone in my area! HELP!!! I really need to know what all available frequency are in Wayne County. Talk groups etc. I really feel like I am missing out on something. like the database is not completely up to date? Thank you for any help

The database online is correct. If you haven't update your scanner from the online database it may not be correct in your scanner.

Safe-T takes a lot of patience to get correctly setup to monitor what you want. depending on how you loaded your program, and geographic location at any given time, you may lock onto a tower in another county that no one you want to listen to is associated with.

As a start look in the database and see what towers you want to monitor (Wayne Co has TWO, even though local law enforcement should probably be on both most of the time...)

7829 005 (5) Dalton Wayne 851.08750a 852.90000c
7829 018 (12) Richmond Wayne 852.93750a 853.11250c

program those four frequencies into your scanner as a new p25 trunked multisite networked system.
put in a wildcard or a dedicated list of talkgroups you want to hear
put you scanner into stationary mode (scan all control channels always)

you should hear any traffic in Wayne Co on the Safe-T system (below and State police also)

DEC HEX Mode Alpha Tag Description Tag
5744 167 D 89 FIRE DISP County Fire Dispatch Fire Dispatch
36384 8e2 D 89 FGD 1 County Fireground 1 Fire-Tac
36400 8e3 D 89 FGD 2 County Fireground 2 Fire-Tac
5712 165 D 89 CO DISP County Law Enforcement Dispatch Law Dispatch
5840 16d D 89 TALK County Car-to-Car Law Talk
5760 168 D 89 OPS 1 County Operations 1 Multi-Tac
5776 169 D 89 OPS 2 County Operations 2 Multi-Tac
5792 16a D 89 OPS 3 County Operations 3 Multi-Tac
5808 16b D 89 OPS 4 County Operations 4 Multi-Tac
5824 16c D 89 OPS 5 County Operations 5 Multi-Tac
5728 166 D 89 CITY DISP Richmond Police Dispatch Law Dispatch

You really need to learn about trunked systems to understand the programming...

Try these links...
Simple trunked explanation (READ ALL OF PAGE ABOVE LINK ALSO)
Trunking Basics - The RadioReference Wiki

A Great writeup on trunking and HOW TO PROGRAM it into a scanner....
http://wiki.radioreference.com/images/c/c7/Trunking_description.pdf

Please read the above links, and then come back with further specific questions... We're here to help, but you have to take the journey to learn....

P.S. there are probably a number of old VHF/UHF analog channels still in use in Wayne Co. You should probably scan for those as well to hear all the traffic for the County; even with Safe-T covering Sheriff, Police and fire in Richmond.

OK, with the home patrol...follow the instructions to install the Sentinel software on your (windows) computer. Select the "update" and "update master hpdb"

Let the software do it's thing. Once the update is downloaded, connect your hp1 to your computer. Then select "write to homepatrol"

Now, you have updated the database to the latest from radio ref. Go ahead and disconnect the hp from your computer. Now, follow the directions on the startup paper that came with the hp1, for setting up your location (zip code) and range. You will probably find it's scanning a LOT more than you will want to listen to. This is where you will want to set "avoids" or remove service types to to narrow down what you want to hear.

You really don't NEED to know in depth information about talkgroup hex or dec or frequencies or band plans at this point. The hp1 is setup so you don't need to know all that info to get started listening.

Once you get familiar with the hp1, you can build favorite lists to better customize what you want to listen to. Also, check out the hompatrol.com site for more info and demo's.

Here's a little easier to understand manual for the hp1: Easier to Read HomePatrol Scanner Manual

One more thing, if you set the range too far out, the scanner will try to scan a lot more channels (probably too many). It's possible, that, if you are trying to scan too many channels, you could be missing the stuff you want to hear. Also, check that you don't have too many service types selected, too.

Hope this helps,
Jeff.

Thanks!!! Starting to get it a little!!

Thanks Madman, JStemann wtvfd601, w9nes, I Think I have gotten the homepatrol narrowed down to what I want to hear. I am listening to 800mhz I believe? And yes one of you mentioned Dalton, in fact Dalton I now know is a township in wayne county,New to me! So I loaded those in. I am getting more chatter now. But am experiencing another aggravation. All my 800s are coming choppy garbled like under water sound. I can only make out half of what is said if I'm lucky. I'm sure I live close to the sources. This is in fact my second Homepatrol in a week now. I returned the first sure it was defective I'm really hoping this one is not also. I seem to hear anything I don't want to hear loud n clear! I'm thinking I'll get an antenna upgrade soon. Any suggestions on an antenna for the 800s range? And still be able to tune in my 155.230 and others local. The analog seem to come in fine. I just really expected better out of the box being 500bucks. Yes I do need to learn alot about trunking and talk groups ect. And would like to install extreme upgrade if I thought it would help me achieve better reception and a broader base. Again THANKS FOR ALL RESPONSES!!! Dan S.

Mr. Madman i am enjoying the links you provided me. I am about to watch the 45 min video defcon. I hope to gain some knowlage and lingo so I can better ask questions. I will do as you've requested and learn what I can wherever you lead me to look into. I don't want to wear you all out and not give effort on my end. Again Thank You For Responding!!! Daniel S.

The garbled or underwater sound on 800 could be the site you're picking up. With 2 sites in Wayne Co., one or the other could be just far enough away to get a weak signal. Check out the signal strength on the different sites your listening to. You might have to avoid one (or more) sites.

The radio shack rubber ducky antenna is hard to beat, but you'll need an adapter for bnc-sma. Your best bet will be (just about) any outside antenna. The Larsen NMO 150-400-800 is pretty good and while it's intended for mobile use, it wouldn't be too difficult to adapt it to home use. The scantenna from radio shack is another good base antenna. Also check out scanner master, they have a wide choice of antennas that would work for indoor or outdoor.
