I live in Livonia Michigan, I would like to monitor Livonia Police which are on P25. My question is do I need a P25 scanner that does simulcast? From my reading it appears that Oakland County does simulcast, but I am not clear on Wayne County. Maybe I need some more education on how MPSCS in Michigan works. Thanks you for your time

To start off Livonia PD is encrypted so they will not be able to be listened to. Canton PD/FD, Hamtramck PD, DTW PD/FD and all Oakland County Law Enforcement are encrypted as well in the metro Detroit Area.
Livonia FD is open. I would Highly recommend getting a Simulcast Scanner for this area if you are still interested in listening. Detroit, Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne all have simulcast systems that are used. Wayne and Oakland do have some stand alone sites that do have traffic but when I listen it appears the simulcast usually has more traffic as it covers a larger area then just a single site.

Thanks! I am a Newbie, I had no idea Livonia PD was encrypted. I have been using one of my Ham HT to monitor Livonia FD. To further educate myself is there a way I can tell who is encrypted and who is not, via radio reference.com? Thanks!!

Check the database in the mode column, in an entry if it is a lower case e it is partially encrypted, an upper case E is full time encryption.

Have you had any luck listening to Livonia FD? Anytime I have listened recently, they do not do toneouts so it's challenging to know what they have going on.

The last time I listened to Livonia FD there were the usual beep, beep, beep, not exactly what I would call tone outs. The only thing dispatch said over the air was something line "Station 5 priority 1 rescue". I would guess that the details of the dispatch is being sent to computer terminals.

Livonia is using the Bryx system for in station alerting. The only reason for the over-the-air tone-outs is just to verify that the station received the call over the station alerting. Since the call details are read out via the computer voice in the station, and posted to their cell phones and computer terminals, no need to dispatch to give the complete call details over the air.
