One interisting note from the above article:

"Once the Sheriff’s Office purchases the new radios, Ficano’s homeland security department has agreed to equip all local police agencies in the county with a device that will allow them to monitor a countywide emergency response channel. "

Would that monitoring "device" be something like a....scanner? LOL!

"Once the Sheriff’s Office receives the funds, Evans said the new system could be in place within six months."

Sounds pretty optimistic, I'd say!

Even though they are on the same TRS currently, the talk in the department is that the airport (PD, security, ops, etc.) will continue to use the existing TRS. They are not having any issues with the existing system at this time (focused area of coverage).

Beyond the talk in the department (rumors), I don't know!

Sounds good...but wouldn't you think that the airport should be on the new system so it can be connected to the county and state in the event of a crash or security breach?

I would have to believe that the current Wayne County TRS tower at Metro Airport will be upgraded to be part of the Wayne County digital TRS and/or the MPSCS, for better coverage, since the airport is a major hub.
I do know that if the system ever fails, the Airport Fire and Police have backup talkgroups on the Northwest Airlines TRS, should they ever need them. However, I have not heard any plans for that system to be upgraded anytime soon to Project 25 modulation.

As I hear it, the County system is only going to have a single "channel" on the MPSCS. The Airport PD is dispatched out of the same dispatch center (same physical room, different console). The dispatchers are physically 12 feet from each other, but there is no routine interconnection between the talkgroups. Currently, there is abiltiy to simucast on several talkgroups, including between the airport PD and the Sheriff's talkgroups, however, that ability isn't used too often for several reasons. Since the Sheriff's department is planning to keep most of the analog talkgroups in place, that ability should continue beyond this "upgrade".

The MAIN tower for the county system is at Merriman and Hines Drive.

They also have the site downtown on the Penobscot Bldg., where the site controller is located.

Is it? I thought all of the controllers/voters were at the airport site?? I KNOW there are some there, I've seen them plenty of times! However, if there are controllers (perhaps for the old system?) downtown, that's news to me!
