>> Duplin EMS Disp 155.2200 UNLOCKED OFF AUTO AUTO OFF CTCSS 110.9Hz OFF OFF

Heard here (Charlotte area) this morning, with the inversion conditions. Scotland, Robeson and Columbus Counties also coming in solidly.

>> Dudley VFD M/A 155.9250 UNLOCKED OFF AUTO AUTO OFF CTCSS 141.3Hz OFF OFF

Those of you living along the coast are as likely to hear Liberty County, Ga Fire dispatch, who also runs a repeater on 155.925 / 141.3 Hz.

Liberty County is just below Savannah / Chatham County - along I-95 - and their signal is occasionally noted in my area. I have also logged them along the Space Coast area of Florida.

Well it is unlikely that the rural areas of Duplin/Wayne counties are going to be part of any Trunked systems any time soon! At-least not as far as what is shown on NC's projected 5 yr plan for its "Viper" project shows anyway. I guess the closest thing to High-tech in Rural areas would be "Hog Calling" in Spiveys Corner (compared to my town of Mount Olive and scanning is concerned)

For instants-

Mount Olive has 1 Freq for Local PD Dispatch set at 155.3100 FM, UNLOCKED OFF AUTO AUTO OFF CTCSS =OFF- but as far as it being local to me 2 Mls away,it shows up on my 396T with 4 points in Signal Strength when the Dispatcher is calling out to Units.

1)When a unit calls into this same frequency it's signal is weak (1 to 2 points) and in-order to hear this call I have the Delay set to 4 seconds.

2)If this channel isn't set to "Priority" calls from as close as Dudley (mile away) or as far away as Goldsboro (18miles) takes it's place receiving.

I have searched other channels in the 155-160 range thinking that I missed some of this repeaters assigned freqs for Mt.Olive PD, and everything that has shown up was either for Mt.Olive FD 154.0100 or for Dudley. Any ideas ?

I didn't understand trunking at all but the more I get into it the more it make sense :)

It seems the huge misunderstanding of VIPER continues. The state isn't responsible for providing much of anything radiowise to your community unless your community decides to participate. The state, as "trustee" of the 800 mHz trunked radio plan for NC, is only responsible for making it possible for your community to participate. It's the responsibility of your community to apply for a place in the system and to apply for the funds and grants, and it's the state's job to make a place for your community in the VIPER plan. Just as much of the large metro systems share their portions of spectrum and their infrastructure with the state, much of the state's infrastructure will be shared with all users, and if your community gets the grants (can't see why they would be denied), those funds will be of two types: the funds to purchase the additional infrastructure equipment which will be added to VIPER, and the funds for the mobiles and portables and dispatch equipment to be used in your community.

Bottom line: If your community doesn't show up in the state's plan, it's because your community has either decided not to participate in VIPER, or it hasn't applied YET, or it has applied and the application and funds are pending. Just because it hasn't shown up doesn't necessarily mean that it won't be added and accomplished before the 5 year projection. If others close by in that sector are already scheduled within the 5 years, then once the funds come through, your community will be added to that portion of the schedule, provided it's not after construction has already started in your area. So don't be too disturbed, it may just be a matter of paperwork.

Unless Duplin County makes a commitment to Viper, it's probably unlikely Mount Olive will consider it.

Wayne County has already publically said they will be upgrading their VHF system, rather than investing in Viper.

With regards to Mount Olive Police reception, their "local" channel is not repeated, which is why you get the disparity between the signal strengths of the base station - at the town hall - and the mobiles. I might consider trying a scanner antenna cut for VHF-High / UHF to see what improvement you can make in reception.

I can only wish Onslow had of upgraded the VHF system instead of the ASTRO system! Looks like I might be moving to Greenville, I like the coventional UHF stuff for fire and police!!

JVRS - you'll also have some Motorola trunking to look forward to in Pitt County. The county sheriffs has a five-channel system in place ... reportedly went "live" last year, with some law enforcement, fire and ems activity on it. Callsign is WPGH941.

Now, if you just want to hear all the B.S. ... without the "bull," check out trunked system operated by Greenville Utilities Commission at their waste treatment plant in located near Greenville : ) Callsign is WPFP218.

Surprisingly, the GUC system is licensed for 8 frequencies, as compared to the 5 frequencies for the county sheriff's system.

I can't speak about Mount Olive specifically, but even when a channel is no longer being used for the purpose that it was licensed, it's still a good idea to presume that it is still in the radios and available for tac use ... possibly even by other agencies in the municipality.

The license is still good, in the F.C.C.'s eyes.
