• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

We need the FCC to crack down on CB

Man. I run a naked Striker and am tired of the locals threatening to kill me because I am are their channel. And this is 30 of 40 channels in the band. Made a recording of one welfare recipient who has enough money for a stryker and a four pill amp that every time I try to joinng a conversation with friends tells me to get off the channel and reminds me he has a 38 with my name on it. Recorded that a few months ago and called the Pickens county sheriff and replayed it. They did not give a **** . What can I do? The 10 to 12 people that are friends do have FM, so we switch to another channel to talk on FM, but I should not put up with threats from old timers with thousands of watts say get off our we will kill you.

The threats weren't as serious, but it has been that way since the early days of CB. There used to be a truck come through our village daily with a powerful amp that bled into almost every other channel (only 23 then). He was furious when a couple of us that lived close to the highway used SSB because it disrupted his reception.

I take death threats serious. Castle law and right to defend here. If he comes on my property I am fine. this is the Idiot I gave a radio to last year tokk it home, we could all hear him fine then took a screwdriver to it and f##**ed it up, literally threw it on the roof of my car that night while bashing me. scratched the paint bad. If he is dumb enough or bold enough to do that, the coroner may be carrying out of my yard one day.

Should the FCC start the crackdown with people using illegal radios? Like the Stryker? 😉

Be careful what you wish for.

time for you and your friends to get a ham ticket or move to another service. (FRS/GMRS/MURS)
but be sure to tell your group to move to the other channel on the CB band one.
that will P them off.
We already piss them off going to FM. but yes we are adapting to GRMS. I have a great base station and a antenna 50 foot up for that also. Live in the hills, with lots of tree so height is king.

I know it is no excuse. but run the radio at around 5 watts 99% of the time, don't need more. I don't want to be the one were you have to go up and down channels to figure out what channel you are actually on. On SSB I will turn it up to about 25 on rare occasions. I do like listening to 10 and 12 meter on it, but never key down.

Kevin, like you and others have said, what good does it do if I have 1k watts if they can not talk back to me. A Sirio 5/8 ground plane works very well at 5 watts 50 feet up.

I bolted from chicken band back in the late 70’s when I decided that I’d finally had enough of the insanity. I got my Novice ticket and three years later upgraded to General and then several years later upgraded to Amateur Extra. I actually had an Advanced Class ticket for about 15 minutes before being handed the written portion of the Extra exam, along with a “CSCE” indicating that I’d previously passed “Element 1C” (better known as the 20 w.p.m. code requirement) and I’ve NEVER looked back. I consider CB radio to be nothing more than a self inflicted gunshot wound at best and there’s absolutely no excuse whatsoever to remain in it’s clutches when the world of amateur radio offers so much more in terms of different operating modes, along with folks who’re generally (but not always) more civilized to each other. It is far easier in 2023 to obtain an amateur radio license than it’s ever been. The Morse code requirement went the way of the dragon many years ago and all that’s required is a little bit of study on the part of the applicant. Seriously, it’s not that big of a deal and the return in operating enjoyment leaves CB in the ash heap of history where it so deservingly belongs!

The FCC realizes that anything they do will be too little, to late, regardless of what they might do. There's no way to regulate it and it would be impossible to ban it. The horse is already out of the barn. Forget it.

Wire up a simplex repeater to your CB. When they get rolling, turn it on and let em talk to themselves. When they change channels, you change channels with em!
If they are going to be dicks, be a dick right back at em :)

Wow, wish I had that problem here. That sounds entertaining to say the least! Local CB talk in SLC has no more folks than I can count on one hand.

That would be giving them more of my time than they deserve.

Think of AM CB as the last 'Freedom of Expression' to the airwaves, it's ALWAYS been home to the good, the bad and the ugly for anyone
who can manage to press the transmit button. You want today's government to step in??? .....Phhhht Good luck with that! ....Or, you can do what I did 40 years ago, tell the numb skull off and head to a different channel, end of story.

I am a lineman for the county.
You are dealing with children. Trying to argue with them will get you nowhere. Trying to beat them at the "who's go the bigger signal" will never end.

That's why most of us moved off CB decades ago. Most of us here have probably run into the same assortment of idiots. CB has it's use, but it's not a good place to hang out and talk. I gave up on it years ago and have no desire to go back.

Honestly? It's nice that there's a place where people like this go when they want to play stupid games. I'm happy they are there and not somewhere else. I think the FCC feels the same way. Essentially leave them in the padded room that is CB, and let them tire themselves out. There is occasional FCC enforcement, but it's rare.

Get your GMRS license. That's a good place for this sort of stuff. Don't let hams try to convince you that you must have a ham radio license. GMRS does what most people need.

Both ham and GMRS have their collection of losers, but they are a bit easier to get away from.

I believe this is how the FCC treats the 435 repeater in CA and have for eons. Let them have their place and they will only bother each other and only destroy each others brain cells with meaningless whatever it is they do.
