Weather Priority -- how's it work?

As I understand it, when you activate weather priority mode, while the scanner is scanning other freqs, it checks back every few seconds to see if theres an alert.
While its doing this, does that mean it cuts away from whatever broadcast its monitoring while it makes that check? In other words will there be a brief interuption while the check is made?

Weather Priority will briefly interrupt to check the NOAA Weather Frequency selected as the Priority weather station to monitor. It is listening to for the 1080Hz tone that is sounded after the Triple S.A.M.E. burst.

I typically only use it when there is severe weather incoming that day as the pause from the check can be a little annoying, the frequency of the check can be adjusted, but too infrequent of a check will miss most EAS Alerts.
