Weird request

Today my girlfriend asked me to get her a CB n antenna for Christmas! WHUUT? Lol
She owns a 2005 Toyota Corolla...
Any ideas/suggestions for what radio n antenna to get her ?
She says she's always wanted one....a good one!

Heard that the new Uniden Bearcat 980 SSB is a great radio.

Toyota Corolla, you really ought to surprise her by installing a 102 inch whip smack in the center of the roof. Make sure you do it without her knowing. Then let us know how that goes. If she's OK with it, she's a keeper. If she's not, well she's likely still a keeper.

My first knee-jerk reaction was a Cobra 75 and a magnetic antenna...the Cobra 75 is compact for the small car, and the magnetic is easily removed when she changes her mind.

Well said, she IS female, she WILL change her mind, frequently and without warning. If you can do this as a Christmas gift, you are getting off cheap. Be happy she is not asking for diamonds.

Doc, you forgot the most important problem of all, eavesdropping. I went that route ONCE, she wanted to know about the other YLs I talked with, most out of range of her mobile. Yeah, she was a blonde. (;->)

Has she had her eye on any one radio in particular? It's all about preference. For the most part, choosing a CB is a lot like shopping for a new vehicle. It's what feels comfortable and what you can see going in her car. I am quite partial to Cobra and Unidens, although I have owned a Midland or two, and even owned an old Sears RoadTalker CB like the one seen in the attachment. Loved them all, hated getting rid of them. Just don't go spending a lot of money on an expensive CB radio and antenna just to have to remove them in a few months should circumstances change. Don't go "el cheapo" either.

Tracker, you lucky SOB. If she's interested in any type of radio communications, either transmitting or receiving, she's a keeper. Some of us have spouses that don't enjoy our hobby and don't understand what it's all about.

You can hope that she gets the "bug" and starts asking for some other types of radio gear. Good luck!

Suggestions

Today my girlfriend asked me to get her a CB n antenna for Christmas!

Here's my shopping tip. Two words; Huge knobs.

Now, about the radio, I would avoid anything with misspelling on the faceplate, such as "Sqeulch" or "Volumne". That would be a bad sign. Also, anything that goes up to channel 83 - that may actually be a TV.

Likewise, I would avoid anything with a built-in Blow Drier with High/Low settings. They don't work well at all unless the car is running.

If it has a pull string and pictures of animals on it and you hear, "The Cow Goes Moo", steer clear - That's a "See 'n Say". There's only 16 animals she can actually speak with.

I like the idea of the 102" whip, but I'd go with trunk mount. It's more "Drive-Thru Friendly".

I'd shop used for a really nice clean radio that she can't figure out. Then open up the "Holiday Help Desk"!

It all depends on the vehicle. There's a guy where I live that has dual (yes, 2) 102's on an 86 Honda Civic hatchback. If I see it I'll try and get a pic of it. A 102 on a 2005 Corolla would be a little more drive-thru friendly than a 102 on the roof of, say, a 2012 Dodge Ram with an 8-inch lift. If she's just looking to talk local, you could buy a cheap mag-mount from RadioShack and be just fine. Start simple, then as her interest grows, then you go for the bigger radio and antenna.

Oh crap, you reminded me of Beethoven with a Hustler Shotgun (so named for the break over feature) 2/3 as tall as a quarter wave whip and the flexibility of an iron bar on a ball mount on the roof of his Ford Falcon. (POS car, I know.) We were crossing a toll bridge into Pennsylvania when it happened, there it was, a sign across the lane hanging from the overhead "bridge". As we were leaving CLUNK... WTH? I looked behind and saw chaos, cashiers running in circles, the window in the opposite booth shattered and the sign swinging from the remaining support on one end, the other nearly on the ground. Whips are more forgiving unless you hit a sign, overpass or other obstruction at highway speed. That's when it lives up to its name... WHIP.
