FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Time: 4:21 am
Location: Highway 85 2 miles south of Nunn, Colorado

On June 26, 2008, at approximately 4:21am, Colorado State Troopers were dispatched to a serious injury, motor vehicle crash involving a train. The crash occurred on Highway 85, approximately 2 miles south of Nunn, Colorado.

Troopers have determined that a 2005 Saturn Ion was southbound on Highway
85 when it drove off the right side of the road. The vehicle then veered to the left traveling back across Highway 85, before exiting the left side of the road. It was at that point that the vehicle began to roll ejecting the unrestrained driver. During the rollover sequence the vehicle continued on, striking the side of a southbound train operated by Union Pacific. The vehicle struck the train-car which was 20th from the rear of the train. It was determined that the train consisted of a total of 101 cars.

Though Highway 85 did not experience any closures as a result of this crash, Highway 14 was closed for approximately 1 hour during the investigation and again for approximately 45 minutes while crews got the train back underway.

The driver of the Saturn was airlifted to Northern Colorado Medical Center in critical condition. It is believed that alcohol was a contributing factor in this crash. While the vehicle is registered to Cheyenne, Wyoming, troopers are still attempting to determine a place of residence for the driver. The name of the driver is being withheld at this hour pending the notification of family.

There were no injuries to the members of Union Pacific on the train.
