A Kersey man died in an oil-field accident Friday.
Jeffrey Byer, 40, died at 10:20 a.m. today after an accident at an oil tank battery site, when a piece of equipment fell on him, said the Weld County Coroner.
This is the second oil field fatality this year.
Byer was working at the Ensign United States drilling station at Weld County Road 74 and Weld 392. He had worked at Ensign for five years.
Workers were unloading a 50-foot-long pipe rack that weighed 2,000 pounds, said Tom Shimp, chief deputy coroner for Weld County.
Byer unchained the rack from a flatbed truck and the triangular piece of equipment fell on him, Shimp said.
The metal pipe rack is used to hold the drilling equipment on a trailer.
Paramedics tried to resuscitate Byer on scene. His girlfriend was the driver of the pilot car that was on site at the time of the incident, said Margie Martinez, Weld County Sheriff's Office undersheriff.
His parents live in South Dakota.
The first fatality this year occured March 27 at an oil rig in Platteville. Christopher Clark, 26, of Platteville was crushed by a flatbed truck backing up to load equipment. The employee worked for Patterson-UTI Drilling Company, which is based in Snyder, Texas.
