A man has been killed and a woman injured as the result of an early morning head-on accident west of Greeley.

Sgt. Bob Rood with the Colorado State Patrol said the man was driving a SUV eastbound on U.S. 34 when he lost control and slid through the intersection with Weld County Road 17, crossing the median and hitting a car driven by the woman who was westbound. She was taken to the Medical Center of the Rockies, but the extent of her injuries were not immediately known.

Traffic is backed up at least two miles in both directions as officials attempt the clear the intersection.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Date: 01-12-09 Time: 11:45 AM

On January 12, 2009 at approximately 5:40 AM., Colorado state troopers responded to a fatal crash on Highway 34 west of Weld County Road 17. A black 1998 Subaru Forester was eastbound on Highway 34. A silver 2008 Honda Accord was westbound on Highway 34. The Subaru ran off the left side of the road, through the median and into the westbound lanes. The Subaru collided head on with the Honda. FALSE

The unrestrained driver of the Subaru has been identified as Viktor Boci, age 50 of Loveland, CO. Boci sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Weld County Coroner.

The restrained driver of the Honda has been identified as Lorie Wurl, age 35 of Greeley, CO. Wurl sustained moderate injuries and was transported via ambulance to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley.

Alcohol or drugs are not suspected as contributing factors.

The leading contributing factor in this crash was the driver exceeded safe speeds for the current road conditions. It was snowing and roads were snow packed and icy at the time of the crash.

The Colorado State Patrol would like to remind motorists to slow down as they drive through inclement conditions along Colorado roadways.

Thanks Jim for the details here.

I heard the code black call go out, after the officer arrived on scene. But wasn't sure the location of this, since there were multiple roll over calls going all at the same time. Between the times of 5:15am to 6:00am while I was close to the scanner. Difficult to track all of the activity, and still get out the door and go to work.

So was curious about this during the day today, and wished of course, it never would of happened.
