A Weld County road grader operator has suffered what are believed to be serious injuries when his maintainer and a train collided at about 1:30 p.m. south of Fort Lupton.
Margie Martinez with the Weld County Sheriff''s Office said a helicopter has been called to air lift the man to a hospital.
The accident is at the intersection of Weld County Roads 27 and 6, about four miles south of Fort Lupton, and less than half a mile east of U.S. 85 on Weld 6.
Pat Persichino, director of the Weld Department of Public Works, said he didn’t know how the grader got on the train tracks and was hit by the train — which was traveling northbound. The grader was working on Weld 6 when it was struck, Persichino said.
He also didn’t know the condition of the man who was airlifted. Persichino didn’t name the man.
Weld sheriff’s deputies and the Colorado State Patrol are investigating the crash, Persichino said.
