Does anyone live within monitoring distance of West Haven? I've been in the city for about two weeks and have been listening to police fine. However, the channel given by RadioReference as "Fire Operations", which I assume is the dispatch channel (since the "Fire Dispatch" channel on RadioReference just clicks randomly even though its simulcast of the ops channel) gives all sorts of static noise, beeping, and other odd noises. I can hear voices every now and then but frequently they end with some weird sound which is not the same every time. Also, there is no tone out for fire. I don't mean the actual "fire tone out", but in every department I've ever monitored, a beep or pulsing tone of some sort preceeds the dispatch. Does anyone have any info about monitoring this city? Thanks. Andy

I live right next to West Haven in Milford. Unfortunately, I'm at school in Maine right now, so I can't listen to them. I haven't had much experience listening to West Haven FD, I have always been confused by their organization. My understanding is that they have 3(?) districts in the city and each has it's own assistant chief. I think this has led to a somewhat disorganized department and at some point (possibly in the past) seperate communications systems for each district. The one thing I'm sure of, a lot of residents aren't thrilled about paying for 3 assistant chiefs.

They use a Zetron Model 6/26 system. You are hearing units reporting their status, etc by sending MSK 1200 bps data bursts.

West Haven Fire Units have a console in each. They press a button when they go 60, 65,63 (enroute, in service, etc) You will hear voice for a 73 (working fire) and so on. Thats progress folks. At least if they do get a confirmed job, you can listen still

Thanks for the info guys. One more question. I understand how that would work well with a paid department. However, West Haven, to the best of my knowledge, is volunteer. So how do they get toned out when there's a call? In other words, does each member get some type of paging device (like a Minitor) and if so, does this centralized system control a dispatch on that frequency?
