The Lakewood police department is investigating a fatal accident that occurred late last evening at the intersection of West Bayaud Avenue & South Sheridan Blvd.

At about 9:30 pm, Lakewood police agents responded to the accident scene and determined that two vehicles had been involved. Each vehicle was occupied solely by a female driver. Early investigation indicates that a Chevrolet Blazer which was northbound likely crossed into the southbound lanes and collided with a Ford Escort. The Escort was driven by 45-year-old Amalia P. Santana-Lopez (07-10-64). The Blazer was driven by 37-year-old Tracey Armijo (03-09-72).

Both women were transported to an area hospital where Santana-Lopez was pronounced dead a short time later.

The investigation will continue in an effort to determine the exact cause of the accident. Investigators must wait for tests results before making a final determination but feel that alcohol may have been a factor.

Armijo faces possible charges of DUI, vehicular homicide, careless driving resulting in death and driving with a suspended license. When released from the hospital she will appear in Jefferson County Court at a later date for a formal advisement.
