Five fire companies in western Broome County -- Vestal, Endicott, Endwell, West Corners and West Endicott -- will share the same radio frequency, and work on the same set of towers. With all the departments communicating on one channel, everybody will be on the same page when an emergency hits.

In a Memorandum of Understanding, Vestal would deed three radio towers it owns -- as well as the radio equipment it has on a total of six towers -- to Broome County, which would then be responsible for all maintenance and updates.

The Western Broome Radio Plan calls for Vestal to share its frequencies and towers with departments in Endicott, Endwell and West Corners and West Endicott.

While Vestal will share its coveted channel one, it will not be handing it over to Broome County, it will just be sharing it with other fire departments.
