I tried to partake in the 1450 contest for week 19 at the Ultralight DX group but man, what freaking pain! On 1450 I had at least 4 stations overlapping, even going off frequency, and trying to null them out (unsuccessfully) I still got too much to understand. Messing with the bandwidth would have been cheating, for the contest, but I decided to try for myself and still no joy.

Interestingly, my RTL-SDR with the Palomar loop picked up nothing (unexpected), the Retekess V115 picked up nothing (expected), but the Eton Elite Executive picked up too much.

Thanks, nice view! But, ya know, that fancy radio of yours is way over classed for the Ultralight category! I'm also afraid my radio addiction is coming back! I have to improve upon the disaster of last night, so I clicked on the loop antenna, (it's currently on sale at Amazon) so this SHOULD give me greater ability nulling out some of those other stations.

Welcome to the graveyard frequencies. A big mess. Best to put on the headphones, use a receiver with decent fidelity (or widen the bandwidth), and listen for an hour or two for IDs. Sometimes you get surprises.

Thanks! :) Yeah, definitely giving me a run for it. I'll give it another shot tonight when I go to bed near the top of the hour. If after 10 minutes I can't dig out an ID, I'll wait for the loop to arrive.

Just keep listening. I got a rare ID on a 1490 or 1450 station from two states away -- out of the blue. It peaked on top of the channel for a few seconds, gave me a full ID, and then went back into the mess. All on a Realistic TRF with no external loop. Just the radio.

Graveyard DXing is a time consuming task. :) But sometimes it will pay off. Higher fidelity (i.e. a little higher bandwidtch) helps, because the IDs that you do hear will be clearer and easier to read.
