Hi there,

I have a new BCD996P2. I have the FreeScan software operational and the latest firmware installed on the scanner.

I have three or four frequencies programmed which are the local fire/mutual aid channels:

154.430 Dispatch
154.445 Dispatch
159.450 Keene Fire Dispatch
154.385 Tactical 1

The issue is that I constantly hear tones followed by static. I do get the occasional voice calls but the tones/static makes it impossible to listen to. It's not the static you get with the squelch too low - I have no static/tone until I get a hit. It's like, tone/static, nothing. The squelch is maybe half.

Is this normal?

Thanks,

Jeff

I cannot find a "Keene" anywhere in Vermont.

It is very important when asking this kind of question to specifically identify the agency(ies) you are trying to monitor. Just the frequency isn't enough.

Possibly you don't have sub audible tones set. This can cause you to hear static before a signal is transmitted. Course this would be more of a static squelch break .Here is a file for Windham Cty, VT. Also do not find Keene in Vermont. Now your 159.45 is close to Windham Cty SO 1, at 159.42 so you could be getting some interference. N oiw Keene NH is about 27 miles northeast of Halifax VT. Try the attached file with the sub tones.

The agency we use here (I'm on the FD) is this:

Fire Mutual Aid » Frequencies

They are based in Keene, but they cover Southern VT.

Now, I am sitting in Brattleboro which is away from those towers somewhat, I have the "Tone" section in Freescan set to 136.5Hz

It's only the two dispatch frequencies that seem to do this. I occasionally get normal talk. It could be that I am out of the area in Brattleboro (I brought the scanner to work to program it). I'll check the file out, and see how the unit performs at home later. There is a tower for KC415 in Halifax.

Some added info.

When it stops on these frequencies, I see v+0 on the display, and in the upper right I see T ----.----

Not sure what those mean.
