Hey just wondering I get some sounds on different channels when scanning. They sound like beeps and different other tones i dont know how to discribe. Almost like a modem but not sorry i know not explaining very well. Anyway Im just reading more on repeaters and wondering exactly what the courtesy tones on these sound like and wondering if these are all repeaters. If so then I hear quite a few when scanning and should probably program them into my scanner. Or are they pagers and what not? Thanks in advance for the info.

What are these noises?

Those modem noises are digital transmissions, and the ones that sound like R2-D2 and C-3PO chatting are encoded digital transmissions. You need a new digital scanner to listen to them, as your analog scanner is no longer able to decipher them. The encoded transmissions, are not decodable even on the digital scanners.

Digital doesn't sound like a modem on an analog scanner, it will sound like a chainsaw (At least P25 digital). The same holds true for the digital encrypted. Most likely you are hearing some other type of data relay or paging. Also depends on what freqs you are hearing the noise on. There is a website with samples of MANY types of data signals you may encounter over the airwaves, perhaps someone will remind us what the URL is.
