I started out by getting the ARRL ham radio license manual...was sad that Barns and Noble had nothing because I have a $25.00 gift card but what else other than the bible itself should I purchase?

To supplement the book I suggest getting the James Thomas app if you have an iPhone

I just used the Patrick Maloney iPad app for the Technician test. I just kept doing the tests over and over until I was passing with at least 30 out of 35 right. Took my test about three weeks ago and passed with 34 out of 35.

Already got the app for the General test installed and am starting on it!

I too would recommend the ARRL book(s) as well. If not for anything, just makes a good reference to keep around. When I took my Tech classes, I had an old (Now Your Talking) book, and it just so happened to have everything I needed in it so I did not need to take notes (which I cannot really write that well anyway). I still use my ARRL books for a handy reference when I need to look something up. I used the ARRL Extra book, along with other sources, but I was told that it was the "harder" route. My father used the Gordon West CDs and book for his Extra. As everyone has said, everything is online, but I still like books, as books are always "online" even when the power is out. If anything, pick up a used book on Amazon.
