In the city, due to it's tendencies to overload & desense in the high rf environment (especially with multiple cell towers), I use the stock (original equipment) antenna on my 500. The R/S 800mhz antenna overloaded so badly, reception was terrible. Once out of the urban area, I switch to a Diamond RH77CA or RH771. These have gain on Vhf-high & Uhf, so work well for Texas DPS, and for the more rural counties, which are generally Vhf.

I'm getting ready to order a Diamond RH-519 antenna, it's a HT antenna for 2 meters and 440 MHz with a 3 dBi gain and is said to be very effective in the 800 MHz band which is what i'll be using it for.

I have duckie antenna's belonging to other scanners all sitting in the same place and no longer know which is the duckie for the PSR500. Does anyone know how to tell which belongs to the PSR500? When in my trunk I use a Larsen tri-band antenna mounted on a L bracket on the hood which works really great. Recieve all frequencies good.

the rubber duckie for the spr-500 look's very similar to the radioshack stock antenna.a little fatter at the bottom.it taper's off slightly toward's the top.it has the 3 grooves around the base about 2" up from the bottom.if it help's look at the picture on the cd or a "googled" picture. i tried the diamond long antenna too.i was not very happy with the result's.it wiped out my reception instead of improving it.i have used the psr-500 in the car with a small mag.mount coil antenna.believe it or not,it still behaves pretty well.i'm still amazed at how well the spectrumsweeper does.

since i live 20+ miles from all the 800mhz activity in my area, i use the radio shack 800mhz antenna. it works great for those distant 800mhz signals, plus performs better then the stock antenna on the uhf and vhf hi bands, from my experience.

I use the R/S 800mhz antenna and have no problems with reception on analog or digital in my area. The antenna has good reception for Dist. 15 which is tollways around the Chicago area.

500 antenna

Well i went to the RS800 and i seemed to enhance the 800 mhz reception. But sometimes the transmissions are very garbuled and hard to understand and i assume that is what is to be considered overloading.Overall i am happy with the RS800.Thinking about getting the Diamond and check it out

In most places I use the RS 800 antenna. In San Francisco I use the Diamond RH3. I still have to use the ATT but not as much.

I just ordered one last Friday, my first GRE PSR 500, and plan on using the old reliable RS 800 antenna.

RS 800 for 800 scanning, Professional-made monoband antennas for VHF/UHF (bought them at hamfests a few years back).

I'm still looking for that link to the monoband BNC's that have the rubber that goes all the way down to the bottom of the connector...
