I believe DAT is short for DATA, or a control channel consisting of data.
Def; In radio communication, a control channel is a central channel that controls other constituent radios by handling data streams. It is most often used in the context of a trunked radio system, where the control channel sends various data which coordinates users in talk groups.
Data is sent in packets, many packets constitute a data stream, each addressed to the specific talk group it belongs to. Many conversations may be happening at the same time with packets from differing talk groups being sent to the intended recipients. These digital packets are created from the audio picked up by a microphone, sent as packet streams and converted at the other end. The transmission starts from a mic as audible sound and ends up at the receiver’s speaker as audible sound, with everything in the middle being digital, or data.
Corrections welcomed… my terminology may be slightly off.
