I agree that TV (no longer) needs all that space, but I think most of this spectrum they "reclaimed" is not being used to its potential.

TV needs more UHF channels than is now allowed, as there is too much overlap in populated areas. This really causes issues for those in the fringe of markets. VHF is all but empty, but most antennas marketed these days do not cover VHF, or at least VHF-low.

Don't confuse channels with frequencies in the digital era. One transmitter can provide many digital channels. ATSC 1.0 did not work well with VHF. ATSC 3.0, which is not compatible, should work better. But adding VHF only adds 12 physical channels.

In the analog days, there had to be a guard-band channel between two local channels. This is no longer required in the digital era and so now all of the signals have been "packed" into UHF channels 14 to 36. All things considered (except perhaps the T band portion), that's a lot of frequencies; each which can be many channels as stated before.

With my antenna pointed in a single direction, a scan results in about 137 channels for me. Looking in other directions (alternate antennas or rotor) gives even more. Yeah there's a lot of redundancy, and at the end of the day, there's still nothing to watch.

I was using channels like the FCC does, as describing the RF allocations. Using only the UHF does not provide enough RF real estate, when markets are near one another. (The number of streams per RF channel is irrelevant.)

The FCC is not using channels like they used to. Have you paid attention to TV markets where ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 are "operational" side-by-side? The whole repack took into consideration: digital does not need the guard-band analog did, Each transmitter output can contain multiple "channels", Congress would love to sell $pectrum for more play money.

It’s only a matter of time before this thread starts discussing FM broadcast radio Hybrid Digital broadcasting standards 😀
They are not using 860-869 MHz. Yeah this discussion was not about modulation type, just physical frequency usage.

Yes, the physical usage. There are not enough of them available near major markets, so there RF channels are recycled too often, for nearby (smaller) markets. This prevents people between those markets from being able to receive options they were able to, before the repack.
