Get the 536HP and the PROSCAN software and you will be very happy!

Where do I find info on this PROSCAN software and is it easy to use??? I would like a handheld however if I can program the 536HP easier I'm good with this... one thing is that the 536HP is like $100 more then the 436HP. If I am going to spend $500+ on this I need to see why and be able to understand it. How do you connect the scanner to the computer to upload or download to it?

436 and 536 are essentially identical in RF performance and programming. You use the same program (Sentinel) to program both.

The only difference is the case shape and front panel display, and the WiFi streaming feature on the 536.

I chose the 436 because I didn't need the WiFi streaming, and the handheld form factor makes it easy to carry the scanner with you, and it takes up less room in a vehicle. You can use a RAM mount to secure it to your center console or dash.

So with either the 436 or the 536 I thought I could just input my zip code and be done. I guess there will be a lot more to this then what I was hoping. I probably like most of you do not want to hear the meat person at Big Y or a gas station attendant talk to someone. I am predominantly looking to hear any and all emergency calls... fire, police, EMS, security at casinos, (casino police, fire & EMS) etc. Will I be able to separate the BS out by doing the zip code version or will I have to buy software to do it from the computer and if I do it from the computer does it save what I have for frequencies on the computer as ones that I am using in my area and those that are available but not using so that I can pick and chose what I want to hear?

ZIP code tells the scanner where you are, so it knows what is likely to be in range.

The Service Type menu lets you tell the scanner what categories of stuff you want to hear.

That takes maybe 5 minutes to set up. Then you can Avoid things or set up a favorite list to refine things further.

Thank you Johwienke! I would take it that all that is done right on the scanner and not on the computer? If you can do that on the scanner what is the advantage of setting up this computer software?

Sorry to keep asking so many questions and probably what seems like the same questions over and over. I just want to make sure I am going to purchase the best scanner that will do what I want without having to pay for things I don't want or need. $500 to me is A LOT of money and I don't take spending that much lightly. As I am sure the rest of you do.

There are several critical reasons to set up the computer software (Siren).

1. It is what you use to download updates to the frequency database and scanner firmware. This will save you hours of entering data by hand, and improve scanner performance and features when updated firmware is available.

2. You'll find it easier and faster to program new favorite lists in Siren than in the scanner menu. Typing alphanumeric data with the scroll knob is a PITA that gets old real quick. And Siren has a function to extract all the frequencies in your area to a favorite list, which you can then manually edit to remove uninteresting items.

3. Editing your favorite lists and settings in Siren means you have a complete backup of all your scanner settings on the computer. You'll particularly appreciate this if you ever have a memory card go bad.
