Hey guys, I have a grundig yatchboy 400pe. It has a memory that holds 40 frequencies. The lists that i've seen have many many frequencies on them. Can anyone narrow this down a little for me? you dont have to give me 40 good freqs, just give me a few good ones. I guess right now, the ones that deal with hurricane dennis would be cool to listen to. Also, I live here in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and i've never been able to hear a thing on 11175. From what I hear, that is supposed to be an active frequency.

If your not picking up 11175 on USB then I suspect you do not have a good antenna. That is one of the busiest air force frequencies.

Of course, the propagation gods might be wrecking havoc on 11175 these days....

Since there are dozens of frequencies as possibilities, you can't just blindly guess. Try going after a specific agency, or listening for a particular service.

Personally I'd first start, as someone already mentioned, with a better antenna. Since you're just using a portable, something simple and reasonably small will do nicely. 30 or 40 foot of wire strung out onto a support such as a tree will likely do the job. Don't go too long or you risk overloading the front end. Disconnect it when there's thunderstorms in the area!

Now if it was me, I'd load the HF-GCS freqs, 13927USB (this is a MARS frequency that has been used in the past by TEAL a/c, which is the common callsign associated with the Hunters) and the MWARA CAR frequencies. If you are listening in the day, stick to freqs over 8 or 9 Mhz or so; at night, go lower.

73s and good hunting...Mike

This may seem like a silly question but, is the wire insulated?

Shorting out to your mast is a sure recipe for no reception.

Check 5, 10 and 15Mhz and see if you can hear the time pings.
