What is a "knox box"?

[davenkaryn]

Can anyone tell me what a "knox box" is? :?: I've heard the fire department make reference to it, which is followed by what sound like touch-tone telephone tones. Thanks in advance.

Here's their website: http://www.knoxbox.com/store/

They supply small very tough key boxes that businesses, or anyone that the FD would prefer to have access to in an emergency, mount on their building that holds keys and/or MSDS info.

These boxes are opened with a high security Medeco key. Each FD has their own key to their area which they keep in a lockbox in their apparatus. Sometimes it's a simple ABC dial combo to open by hand, or in your case, the dispatcher MUST signal the box over-the-air to open with a KNOX version of DTMF codes. They aren't the standard codes but similar.
