Just heard a few GMRS guys talking about having a "squaker". Not sure if it's the brand name of a part or if it's a type of part. It sounded like it was some kind of mod to their radio. They also mentioned having updated firmware.
They probably do just like the way it sounds but MDC1200 can be used for more than just unit ID. The Wikipedia page has a pretty good summary:So you're saying these GMRS guys probably just like the way it sounds and the fact that it identifies their radios to each other?
I love hearing MODAT on digital systems...
Yes, Cops does insert some MDC tones here and there. They also insert other "ambient" noise during deadspace, which in my opinion, weakens the integrity of the show (it would be a definite no-no in journalism). They'll use MDC tones sirens, random beeps, the roar of an engine, squealing tires, anything basically. Sometimes they do it to hide "sensitive" information like last names, addresses, or Social Security numbers. You'll be surprised how "convenient" those squawks are when you listen closely for them! Most of the sound bites are stock and very generic, so some of them are easy to spot if you've already heard them in computer games, TV shows or movies.
