These terms aren't in our glossary - and I guess it's time to add them since I have no doubt I'm not the only one who doesn't understand these terms

What are they, and what do they do?

Hi Mike,

The "Close Call DND" stands for Close Call "Do Not Disturb". Close call only functions when the scanner is not actively receiving, so you're not disturbed. You may find that explanation in the 996's manual since it came with Close Call DND.

Uniden Japan has the same feature in the PRO-433 & PRO-528 they make
for Radio Shack. Their's is called Signal Stalker I and the feature
is "Voice Interrupt". How to turn it ON and OFF is found in the MENU.
