• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

A friend of mine in the GTA has set his mobile back up and is finding zero for activity 27/7.
I find it hard to believe that for a very large metropolitan area thats it doesnt have activity. He checked Channel 19 of course as well as having his radio scan all 40 Channels all day long and zip.

Anyone have any suggestions?

First thing I'd do is check his radio. Is he getting any noise? Check rf gain, PA switch etc.
Get someone with a cb (or buy a cheap cb & antenna) to verify 1st radio does receive.

It's unusual to not get anything for days.
What antenna is installed? Where on the vehicle is it installed? What type of mount does the antenna use? What cable are you using?
I know that's a lot of questions, but before anybody can answer we need to know the answers.

Everything has been checked. He is an experienced radio user with decades of experience. After a CB absence he is getting back into it.
Cobra radio, proper coax and a whip antenna. He logically checked RF gain etc.... Oddly enough he is not even rx any Skip whic=h lead me to think antenna.

However his setup isn’t the question, the question is where is the traffic nowadays in the GTA. Back in the day it was Ch 10 ( The Dime) and everyone moved off from there. If he can zero in on a channel that has some traffic he can then rejig his system if required Then.

When conditions are good, you should be able to receive ch. 6 without any trouble at all. If you don't get anything on there in a couple days, then each element of the installation needs to be carefully inspected. What antenna is being used, and where is it located on the vehicle? If we know that, we might be able to narrow it down to the issue, if we don't have specifics, then I don't see where anybody can do much more than give generalizations as to what might be the problem. I have seen people with 40+ years experience overlook something minor that is causing all the trouble - could be there's a cable break at one of the connectors which will never show up with a physical inspection.

Appreciate all the good info. He is aware of Ch 6 aka the Super bowl. His equipment is all good and verified. He has “buzzed” out the coax etc... Its a cobra and a 9’whip.
Not to sound like i am going in a circle but, the question was on the active channels in Toronto and surrounding area.
Other than the fact I suspect he needs better antenna (although its hard to beat a 9’ whip )he should be rx something. I already ran all the simple things by him. I’m waiting for the skip to roll in and see what happens as locally its quiet...

I'm in Mississauga and a couple of years ago when I had my HF radio and outdoor antenna up, I'd listen to 11M on occasion to see if 10M was open and didn't hear much of anything. There was some trucker traffic on 19 I'm guessing coming from the 401 and some SSB activity on 38/39 but that was about it.
