• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

What is the difference in these two HT1000's?

The first one has software v2.04 and the second one has v4.04. That's it. Personally, I'd go with the later software version.

The band split is the same. The one is a DN and the other is a BN. DN is the latest revision and the last produced by motorola. The revisions are that there are more options avalible with signaling and other things. The longer antenna is a wideband whip. The other is a stubby that is more band specific.

The radio with the later software seems to have some dings in it. Looking for an HT1000, is the $165 a good price, and is that the type of condition they will be in (because it does seem beat up). I have been looking for quite some time but it is tough to find some with the band split of 450-520.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Only D Model HT1000s will do the narrowbanding that will soon be required for VHF and UHF operations.

Oh, by "soon" you mean 2013 unless they extend the deadline again, right?

Go for the DN if the price is right...

You can still send them in under contract as well.

Please elaborate. Who can I send them in to? Moto? and for what?

Also, I do want to go for it, can afford it, just not sure if that's a good price/good quality (looks kind of beat up).

He means sending it to moto if you have problems but you'd likely pay more to fix any issues than what's it's worth.

I can't say $150-165 is a good price unless it is in MINT condition, and then I'd still have to say no. That much for a beat up radio just don;t sound too good to me unless you really want it and don't mind the condition (plus can program it/get it programmed).

Programming isn't an issue. I am on a FD so that isn't a worry. We are only issued pagers (with the exceptions of officers) but I would like to have a radio (which isn't an issue as there are others who have purchased their own). Guess I will wait for one in better condition to come available.

Oh, the newer one (D version) also have a five year old radio so I can't see that as being something to depend on for much and it also has a slow charger (16HR-ish). It does have the longer than usual belt clip, something you don't see everyday :D

Charger N1171A will recharge the HT1000 battery in about 1.5 hours.

If you can live with only 16 channels, no display, and but a single scan list per radio (as can the bulk of local public safety applicatdions), the HT1000 is one of the most rugged portable radios around. Virtually every PD in eastern Massachusetts used them (until federal grants required buying radios that can be flashed to P25).

Well ok, yeah.

I mentioned the slow chargers because BOTH of the linked auctions include the slow charger, easy to see that without a part number.

Speaking of that, do you still need that speaker mic I have? It's just sitting around but let me know either way.

Was it the 450-512 mhz band split because it seems this split in generally more expensive than a 403-470 (and am not sure what the VHF units go for).

If it was indeed the 450-512 split, then that sounds like a good deal and would love to be able to snag one at that price. I am watching EBAY all the time for one as well as the For Sale forums here.

I can't speak for him but I will anyway  It probably was a 450-520 since he is in SoCal and they are heavy in the T-band stuff too.

I saw quite a few on ebay when I looked, I just search for "HT1000 UHF" and sort the bandsplits when I look at each auction. One guy had a brand new in box for almost $500 which is high but still quite a bit less than what it was when it was brand new.

Good luck, bet you'll find one easy enough. I would give some advise and not worry too much about included batteries as since you are needing it for something serious I'd suggest buying new batteries anyway.

Some will poopoo the idea of using an ebay radio for public safety use but I guess it is better than no radio at all.

Now comes another newbie radio question - Where can I purchase a battery for the radio? Any electronics shop?

No, places that deal with motorola radios can get them if they don't have them in stock. This is the guy I buy my motorola batteries from and will buy from again if I ever need any motorola parts.

http://myworld.ebay.com/motorolaauthorizeddealer/

If he don't have any listed you can e-mail or even call him and tell him what you want as he carries several batteries that fit the HT1000.

Thanks a lot Grog. I have a pretty good grasp on scanners but radios are so foreign to me at this point. I really appreciate the help you have provided.
