I cannot explain the meaning of the word " unity " in that sentence. It does not make sence. Unity = no gain and no loss - or better said this way = 1 to 1 relationship......fineshot1

When speaking of gain, "Unity" means 1:1 or no gain or loss.

Of course that is worthless information without knowing what they are comparing it to.

Unity when referring to gain or loss of antennas is just that, a ratio of 1. It all depends on the reference point, sometimes a dipole or ground-plane, or an isotropic (point) source typically used in microwave work.

Hi all,

When it comes to "unity gain" the difference between dBi and dBd is negligable. When gain figures above unity are calculated the difference is multiplied and becomes readily aparant.

6. Maths.
a. the number or numeral one.
b. a quantity assuming the value of one: the area of the triangle was
regarded as unity.
c. the element of a set producing no change in a number following
multiplication.

The difference in dB is constant.
The difference is 2.15 dB

Therefor a unity gain antenna (reference dBd) is a 2.15 dB gain antenna (reference dBi)
Therefor a unity gain antenna (reference dBi) is a -2.15 dB gain antenna (reference dBd)

An antenna with 3dB gain (dBd) is 5.15 dBi
An antenna with 5dB gain (dBd) is 7.15 dBi
An antenna with 6dB gain (dBd) is 8.15 dBi
An antenna with 10dB gain (dBd) is 12.15 dBi
