When I ask this I mean what freq can you turn to almost anytime of day and hear something on the Ham bands?

Like when I go to sleep or am relaxing by my radio, I want to be able to set it on one freq when people will talk for hours?

Or am I asking for to much?

Try WWV on 2.5, 5, 10, 15, & 20 MHz.

They tend to dwell on one topic. :)

Seriously, there always seems to be someone around 14.300 during the day and all over 80 meter phone at night.

14300 is the Maritime net that serves ships/boats at sea and military personnel deployed overseas (but mostly just maritime) and is quite busy and you get your best reception during the day. What frequencies you may wish to montitor is also based on time of day. 40 and 75 meters is best at night while 20 and up are best during the day. It's all about the ionosphere and its changing reflective properties.

It's not the ham bands, but you can tune to USB AFRTS feeds. They run 24/7 on different frequencies. Just search AFRTS sw frequencies.

Daytime:

County hunters 14336khz - collecting US counties via mobiles for awards. http://www.countyhunter.com/
Midcars 7258khz - a place for HF mobiles to hang out. http://www.gsiddall.com/Mid1.html
ECars 7255khz - same thing, east coast. http://www.ecars7255.com/
(is there a West coast net?)
Trans-Provincial Net (Canada) 7055khz daytime - Even a stretch to hear for me in Wisconsin, but I can hear 'em. Swap net I think on Sundays.

DX nets and such: http://www.ac6v.com/nets.htm

I like 75 meters in the late afternoon for the local nets. A little Googling for your area should come up with a few. Here in Wisconsin we've got the Hwy94 net 3994khz, Wisconsin Sideband net, Country Cousins, The U.P. Net (Michigan's Upper Penninsula), there's a bunch. In the mornings (I never get a chance to hear it) is the Milwaukee - FLorida Net on 20 m. SSB. Quite popular here. Old timers checking in with their buddies who are in warmer climes. http://www.513repeater.org/nets/nets_mke_area.htm

I found this nice list for those of us 'up north': http://www.bandplans.com/index.php?band=40
